History
The extensive building, covering an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, is the result of restoring an ancient stone structure with an "L" layout, which evolved over the centuries around a central, taller, and massive structure with buttresses (likely a fortified tower house) dating back to the 12th–13th centuries.
Though it was in a state of ruin and abandonment, the rustic structure displayed traces of a distant past not associated with rural use: ancient cross-vaulted and barrel-vaulted ceilings on the ground floor, and on the upper level, a large pre-Renaissance fireplace with the original hood made of rows of terracotta bricks and a stone slab etched with ecclesiastical symbols. These elements likely bear witness to a distant presence of religious orders (such as the Camaldolese), who played a significant role in the medieval history of Tuscany.
Equally notable are the splendid ceilings of two large rooms adjacent to the central body, one featuring exposed wooden trusses, the other boasting brick sail vaults supported by brick pillars—remnants of an ancient portico, likely dating back to the 18th century. The history and function of the structure in the distant past remain somewhat obscure due to the loss of documentation.
What is certain is that in the 19th century, it belonged to a wealthy family from the Maremma region, the Collacchioni, major landowners and horse breeders who played a key role in promoting local culture. In recent times, the complex served as housing for farmers, as well as stables and a tobacco drying facility.
